Chochin were once carried at night as hand-held lanterns, or hung as signs in front of shops. Even in an age of electric lighting, this traditional illumination is still cherished in Kyoto, where "Kyo-chochin" are an essential part of traditional summer festivals.Perhaps this is because the soft glow of washi paper and beautifully painted patterns and motifs have a majestic and uplifting aura unmatched by other light sources, and bring excitement to our daily lives.More than a source of illumination, the chochin’s light is a vibrant cultural medium that will continue to brighten the streets of Japan into the future, inspiring the large lantern that gently glows as the centerpiece of this window display.
