Yuzen dyeing, a traditional craft born in Kyoto, is one of Japan’s most renowned textile arts. Using brushes, artisans paint vibrant patterns that are then dyed to resemble fine works of art. Pure water is essential in every stage of its production. Beyond its practical role in creating these textiles, water is the source of life that nourishes the richness of nature. Just as the brilliance of this life—flowers, plants, birds—became motifs expressed on Yuzen textiles, artisans and craftspeople across regions have long been inspired by every element of the natural world, each capturing it through their own distinctive strokes.
When I first encountered the Hermès carré Bouquet Final, I felt that, despite differences in technique and expression, it beautifully reflects the essence of nature on textile in the same way Yuzen dyeing does. This led me to envision presenting it in the style of traditional Japanese kimono patterns.
As winter causes flowers and plants to fade, the blossoms that suddenly bloom across the textile illuminate the window display, as if heralding the arrival of the warm spring just ahead.
