The story behind

The mid 19th-century color plate that inspired artist Florence Malik is from a book in the Émile Hermès collection, Le Bourrelier harnacheur (“The Saddler and Harness-Maker”). The harness links the horses to the beam – the long wooden bar fixed to the front of horse-drawn carriages and used to steer the vehicle. The strict composition and almost imperceptible irregularities testify to the skilled hand that worked on these plates. With her precise and delicate style, Florence Manlik interprets the motifs, stitching, eyelets, reflections and brilliance, laying out the different parts of the harness on silk.
