The story behind
Della Cavalleria is one of the most remarkable treatises in the history of equestrianism, written by Georg Engelhard von Löhneysen and first published in Bavaria in the late 17th century. Preserved in the Émile Hermès collection, the work is illustrated with Baroque engravings, including a notable series of German sleighs decorated with mythical creatures and pulled by horses sporting sumptuous, decorative harnesses. Virginie Jamin takes the extravagant designs to fresh heights, mixing and matching the horses and chimerae, and accessorising them with an array of toys and games – a racket, yoyo or diabolo – to create curious visual associations, in the spirit of the French game cadavres exquis.
