The story behind
At hunting meets or equestrian competitions, horses wait in their "grande tenue", or ceremonial dress, of blankets in wool broadcloth and sheets in monogrammed checked cotton. Hermès' archives include a unique collection of these emblems designed to identify teams by their owners' monograms, the oldest of which date from the era of Napoleon III. The stamped monogram of a viscount, with highly graphic lines, sits opposite that of a Romanian prince, while a lion merging from a ducal crown faces those of Napoleon III and a maharajah. The center displays the monogram of Émile Hermès, a passionate collector responsible for the House's collective memory.
