The leather school: passing on values and skills
Pearling Off
The action of pearling off consists in giving a nail two “heads”. Or, more exactly, in endowing the severed end of a nail with the same convex, bead- or pearl-like aspect as its head. What part of a handbag is nailed down? Well, the side-strap plaques, the swivel clasps and the brackets – all those pieces of metal that are fixed at each of their four corners on each side of a strip of leather. In order to pearl off, the leatherworker needs an iron pack (tas), a light hammer and a beading tool (perloir), which is a kind of big, stubby steel pencil, with grooves for a good grip and a hollowed end, a bit like a ballpoint pen without the point.
