Hermès expands, revealing the local culture in Kuala Lumpur
On March 1, 2024, the newly renovated and extended Hermès boutique in The Gardens Mall in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, reopens to reveal a bespoke design that celebrates local architecture and craft.
Malaysian vernacular architecture echoes in the distinct flooring and partitions that create rhythm and delineate each of the sixteen métiers of the House. Locally sourced materials are harnessed in innovative ways: in the 3D façade that recalls local weaving traditions and the emblematic Faubourg mosaic — reinterpreted and rendered for the first time in bamboo marquetry on variant shades.
Throughout the store, a sun-drenched colour palette in gradient hues of deep yellow, ombre and rust enlivens the warmth and beauty of the wood. Carpets with hand-tufted textures, and the walls of more intimate spaces, are clad in raw silk panelling in champagne and burnt orange hues.
To mark the reopening, a window display of hand-made puppets reimagines the traditional Malaysian puppet theatre play ‘Wayang Kulit’ with a modern twist to illuminate the 2024 theme of the year, ‘The Spirit of Faubourg’. An eye-catching invitation to discover the breadth and modernity of its collections in this new and unique environment.
