The story behind
Have you ever seen such a creature, an illusion with a horse's head and a mermaid's tail? The Ancient Greeks called it a hippocampus, and saw in it the image of Poseidon, god of sea and the waves, storms and earthquakes. Through this extraordinary being emerging from the foam, Alice Shirley evokes the power of the elements and the shock of an apparition. For this design she drew inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci's horsemen, the reliefs of the Trevi Fountain in Rome, and Japanese woodcuts, whose delicate colors and lines she has borrowed, for a fabulous journey through time and space.
