The story behind

J. Robert Hart's 1792 watercolor inspired Caty Latham to design the Washington’s Carriage scarf. In 1789, the first president of the United States took his seat in a coupé decorated with eagles with outstretched wings and made the journey from his New York residence to the Federal Hall. One corner of the original design is enlarged here, giving birth to a new, graphic composition. In this detail, the eye concentrates on the arabesques of the design, on the axle and the movement of the wheel - the very image of America setting its future in motion.
