The story behind

This scarf is inspired by an illustrated catalogue from the beginning of the 19th century, preserved in the Émile Hermès collection. In order to build a reputation with demanding customers across Europe who were curious about their work, saddlers entrusted illustrators with the task of representing their products in a simple and realistic way. Gathered into albums, these plates show the different product lines and materials in their finest light, using watercolours and gouache. In Panoplie équestre, Virginie Jamin interprets the gracious sobriety of these illustrations, arranging bits, leather and steel in an ingenious arabesque design.
