The story behind

This skirt is cut from a Washington’s Carriage printed silk twill scarf, remeshed to a silk and cashmere knit. The print on the skirt starts where the tunic ends, which when worn together give the illusion of a skirt suit. A silk and cotton yarn is knitted in a delicate quilted stitch to give a little thickness while remaining light. The striped silk detail contrasts with the frame of the scarf for a camouflage look.

The story: the Washington’s Carriage scarf (designed by Cathy Latham in 1979) was inspired by a watercolor painted in 1792 by J. Robert Hart. It illustrates the carriage in which George Washington is said to have travelled from his New York residence to Federal Hall.
