The story behind

In the 19th century, the excellent reputation of French carriage-making travelled beyond Europe. This carriage, commissioned in 1894 by the Chinese empress Cixi (1835-1908) from the highly respected Parisian house of Mühlbacher, was designed to be drawn by four horses led by footmen. The model is ornamented by a multitude of scrolls in gilded wood, with a studded silk interior. The Morocco-leather harness with chased brass fittings was commissioned from the house of Hermès. Wlodek Kaminski paints a faithful portrait of this coupé, and adorns it with Indian stones and jewels worthy of the great maharajas.
