The story behind

This kimono sleeve dress is cut from a Washington’s Carriage printed silk twill scarf, remeshed to a silk and cashmere knit. A silk and cotton yarn is knitted in a delicate quilted stitch to give a little thickness while remaining light. The plain portion features a ribbed knit for a sportier look.

The story: the Washington’s Carriage scarf (designed by Cathy Latham in 1979) was inspired by a watercolor painted in 1792 by J. Robert Hart. It illustrates the carriage in which George Washington is said to have travelled from his New York residence to Federal Hall for his investiture in 1789.
