The story behind

“Fantasy alphabet, cut-out blue and red leather” is how these letters from the early 1930s were itemised in the house’s registers. Very early on, Hermès started offering its customers the chance to personalise bags, luggage and even clothing. This skill was a continuation of its first métier as a harness-maker and saddler, at a time when horses’ harnesses, blankets and hoods were marked with the initials of their owners. Typography therefore became one of the house designers’ fields of excellence. The lively, stylised characters of this Art Deco alphabet have lost none of their appeal.
