Cavalleria d'Etriers shawl 140 - flat

The story behind

Two designs, Étriers, from 1964, and Della Cavalleria, from 2014, are mixed, mingled and reinvented in this thoroughly modern scarf. Their shared inspiration comes from the collection of Émile Hermès, an infinitely rich array of books and objects, in which the horse takes pride of place. Stirrups – including superb examples of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century metalwork – are made by artisans the world over, from South America to the Middle East, via France and Spain. Entwined with serpents and chimerae, the harness-pieces seen here are inspired by prints dating from the early seventeenth century.
