The story behind
Paris’s iconic Big Wheel, the Grande Roue de la Concorde, and its accompanying fairground rides are the inspiration for the lively geometry of Nigel Peake’s design. An architect by training, Peake’s composition skilfully translates the subject-matter into near-abstract lines and planes, while its sing-song title echoes the fairground riders’ shouts of childlike glee as they soar skywards.
This fresh, bold composition radiates an infectious joy. We see the shape of the wheel, ribbons undulating like roller-coasters, plus spots and stripes and chequerboard patterns in a riot of colour. One Two Three and Away we Go! The title is full of promise, a prelude to adventure and, perhaps, an exciting voyage of discovery.
